In the world of guitar amps, there exists one legendary designer and brand that very few ever get to meet, see, or play through. This is Alexander “Howard” Dumble and his namesake, Dumble amplifiers. Normally reserved to the paragon of players, you’ll find his amplifiers backing up such artists as Carlos Santana, Robben Ford, and even the late, great Stevie Ray Vaughan.
No two Dumbles are the same, but it’s the Dumble Overdrive Special that continues to reign as the man’s pinnacle design. The amplifier boasts unique sound and feel that is praised for its ability to enhance and uncover every nuance of a player’s technique and tone. And it’s this ability that has earned the amp a reputation for being one of the finest and most expensive ever made.
Because these mythical amps are extremely hard to come by, Synergy created the OS preamp module, our tribute to its iconic sound. The OS module packs the Dumble personality and user experience in a compact format, providing affordability and convenience that the original can never match.
Yet, the Synergy OS Preamp Module is yet another heavy hitter from Synergy. It’s built for guitarists who “play as much with their fingers as with their controls.” This is a module that responds first and foremost to pick attack and guitar volume, rather than relying on sheer gain. That said, this isn’t about clean country tones, it lives in a more high-gain, dynamically responsive territory where the sound constantly evolves under your hands.
The clean channel is open and dense, with forward mids that never turn harsh. It handles variations in attack with ease, moving from tight clean tones to light breakup without touching the controls. This isn’t a polite clean, it’s a living foundation that naturally pushes into crunch when you dig in.
The overdrive channel builds on that same foundation, adding progressive compression and long, controlled sustain. The texture remains smooth, with clear note separation even in chords. The OD Level and OD Ratio controls allow precise adjustment of both gain and saturation structure, and they genuinely affect the playing feel.
The Bright, Deep, and Rock/Jazz switches are not cosmetic. Bright enhances attack and adds top-end clarity. Deep reinforces the low end without making it loose. Rock/Jazz reshapes the midrange character, either more direct and aggressive or smoother and more extended. This is about shaping overall response rather than fine EQ.
Within a Synergy system, it becomes one voice among others. You can pair this very organic, touch-sensitive character with more modern or aggressive preamps without changing amps. The rear Cathode Select switch further refines the low-end feel, from tighter response to something softer and more elastic.
