The Sigma label was established in 1970 by C.F. Martin & Co. to counter Japanese imitations. Initially manufactured in Japan at an affordable price, these guitars adhered to strict standards through collaboration between Martin and the subcontractor. The brand is now owned by A.M.I. based in Munich, which also distributes the famous American guitars in Europe. The specifications remain stringent, but production has shifted to China to maintain a favorable quality-price ratio. As a result, budget-conscious enthusiasts will find Sigma a recommended choice.
The Sigma 000R Black Diamond goes for a sober, almost strict design, with a polished black gloss finish, white binding, a multi-stripe rosette and small diamond inlays. The non-cutaway 000 body remains compact and well balanced, with a solid AA-grade European spruce top and laminated Indian rosewood back and sides. The build is serious for this range, with a dovetail neck joint, open-gear Grover tuners and discreet hardware.
Playing comfort is one of its real strengths. The 000 body sits easily against the player, especially when seated, and feels less tiring than a larger acoustic. The short 24.75" scale reduces string tension, making barre chords, light bends and long sessions easier on the hand. The mahogany low-profile neck feels direct, with a 1.75" nut width that leaves enough room for fingerstyle without becoming bulky. The Micarta fingerboard provides a smooth surface, and a coherent feel.
Sonically, the solid spruce top brings clarity, attack and good articulation. The 000 format favours clean note separation, readable mids and a quick response rather than massive low end. The laminated rosewood adds width and a bright upper register, with a more controlled response than solid back and sides. This Sigma is particularly well suited to fingerstyle, blues, vocal accompaniment, light rhythm work and recordings where precision matters more than sheer size. The Fishman Sonitone electronics is discreet, mounted inside the soundhole, with a simple and functional amplified sound for stage use or direct recording (no onboard tuner).
