The MXR CAE MC-404 Wah is a wah (or wah-wah, depending on how you say it) for guitarists who actually use the effect as an expressive tool (so, not Kirk Hammett). It’s aimed at players who want control underfoot, the ability to shape the frequency range, and maintain consistency within sometimes complex rigs (which, to be fair, might still interest Kirk Hammett).
The key feature is the dual Fasel inductor design. The yellow mode opens things up, with a wide sweep and a more modern feel, almost hi-fi in certain positions. The red mode tightens the range, more mid-focused, more familiar, with that vocal quality typical of classic wahs. Switching between the two genuinely changes the way you play, not just the sound. Underfoot, the response is precise and progressive, with no dead spots. The adjustable tension lets you tailor the mechanical resistance to your playing style. You can work subtle nuances or dig in aggressively without the pedal falling apart.
The onboard boost changes the game in real-world use. It lets you bring the guitar back into the mix without relying on another effect. Used lightly, it compensates for signal loss. Pushed further, it becomes a real tool for solos, with clean and usable gain on tap.
Internal trim controls add another layer: adjusting the Q changes the width of the filter and therefore the character of the wah, from subtle to very pronounced. It’s a pedal you can genuinely dial in for a specific amp.
