Based in the Belfast area of Northern Ireland, George Lowden revolutionised the steel-string acoustic guitar world in the mid-1970s with a bold and highly personal concept: a steel-string instrument offering projection comparable to the finest concert classical guitars, combined with remarkable power and sustain. Lowden guitars immediately drew attention and have continued ever since to captivate players seeking a unique voice and a distinctive aesthetic.
The Lowden F-22 MA/RC is an all-solid F size that introduces the 22 Series into the handcrafted all-solid world of the Irish maker. The combination of red cedar and mahogany creates a warm and balanced instrument, while the F mini-jumbo body offers a generous and comfortable shape on the lap, neither bulky nor overly narrow.
The solid red cedar top sits at the heart of the instrument’s character. This soft and lightweight wood, with its pronounced grain, reacts instantly under the fingers and releases a naturally warm, round, and organic voice. It pairs perfectly with the solid mahogany back and sides, which add body, rich midrange warmth, and focused projection without ever becoming aggressive. The 5-piece mahogany and rosewood neck uses Lowden’s Dolphin profile, designed to fit naturally in the hand while remaining firm and precise. The ebony fingerboard and rosewood bridge complete a construction that remains carefully executed down to the smallest details, while the gold Gotoh SG381 tuners with ebony buttons provide the final touch to an instrument designed to resonate freely.
Tonally, the red cedar delivers an immediate and warm response, with clear but never harsh trebles, velvety mids, and a soft attack that flatters the touch of the player. The mahogany back and sides push the midrange forward, add depth to the lows without making them overpowering, and provide the dry, focused projection that characterises mahogany-backed Lowdens. The entire instrument almost breathes as a single piece, following the authentic philosophy of the brand: to favor the wood's vibration. The F-22 MA/RC naturally excels in fingerpicking, where the warmth of cedar and the definition of mahogany highlight every nuance, but it feels equally at home in folk, intimate accompaniment, or acoustic blues, anywhere organic resonance and touch sensitivity matter more than sheer power.
