This Lakland USA Series 44-64 is built around luthiery quality, playing comfort, and a sound that speaks for itself. Put bluntly, it is one of the best basses we have played. The ash body delivers a firm low end with a clear, defined attack, while the rosewood fingerboard adds a darker, more controlled texture. The abalone blocks and white binding are not decorative excess: they provide clear visual markers, easily readable even on dim stages.
In hand, the bass feels immediately stable and comfortable. The 34" scale and 1.5" nut offer a fast, accessible playing surface without unnecessary width. The vintage neck profile is familiar and quickly mastered. Hipshot Ultralite tuners keep the weight balanced and prevent neck-dive. The PLEK-treated frets make the entire fingerboard smooth; every position lands cleanly, and shifts feel natural and effortless.
Tonally, the PJ configuration performs exactly as a professional instrument should. The split P centres the spectrum with consistent attack and solid mids. The bridge J tightens definition and highlights articulation without harshness. Blended, they reach an easy equilibrium suited to dense mixes or more minimal playing. The response stays honest, avoiding artificial low-end bloom or thinning of the highs. The pickups handle and enhance everything from light overdrive to aggressive fuzz. In our view, this is one of the best basses on the market today, arguably anywhere.
