Founded in the late 1970s by the late Bill Collings in Texas, Collings Guitars is the flagship of American manufacturing. While the brand now uses modern manufacturing processes, it makes no compromises: every element is carefully selected and every detail is given special attention, so much so that the quality of the models produced systematically exceeds that of the most renowned Custom Shops.
The Collings SJ Indian is a fine piece of craftsmanship with notable expressive potential. It follows the lines of a 16" Small Jumbo body on the lower bout while staying streamlined. The Sitka spruce top is striking, delivering a lively response with a balanced blend of crisp attack and controlled sustain. The Indian rosewood back and sides provide solid bass and a well-defined midrange, suitable for both strumming and fingerstyle.
The Honduran mahogany neck offers a smooth feel in the hand, with a comfortable profile that makes moving between open chords and more technical passages effortless. The ebony fretboard is equally attractive and comfortable. The ebony bridge paired with a bone nut contributes to the instrument’s overall clarity.
The nitrocellulose finish highlights the luthier’s work by letting the wood breathe while preserving its look. Details like the ivory binding on the body and fretboard or the modern diamond inlays remain subtle and elegant.
