The Ampliphonix and Gain doesn’t try to stack features, it focuses on two distinct, coherent channels that actually work in real situations, whether live or in the studio. The 22 watts hit a smart balance. Enough headroom to play with a band, but flexible enough to push the amp without excessive volume.
The Ampliphonix channel is a true character clean, not flat or sterile. You quickly feel the power section compression, giving that organic response you expect from this kind of circuit. Played softly, the sound stays wide and open. Dig in, and it thickens and pushes without collapsing. The bright switch opens up the top end without making it stiff, making it easy to match with different guitars. This is a channel that lives on dynamics, where you can shape everything from your touch and volume control.
The Gain channel shifts attitude completely, but without a disconnect. It sits in a revisited Plexi territory, with tighter low end and a more controlled grain. The attack is sharp and definition holds even at higher gain. You can dial in a tight, punchy rock crunch or push into thicker lead tones without losing clarity. Most importantly, it reacts very well to the guitar’s volume, letting you genuinely control the gain from the instrument.
The transition between the two channels is particularly well executed. You can move from a deep clean to a thick overdrive without feeling like you’ve switched amps, yet everything changes. There’s continuity in response, in feel. The reverb on each channel is well judged, adding space without washing out the signal. The boost does exactly what it should, pushing you forward in the mix when it’s time to step out.
