George Lowden has been a friend of the house for nearly forty years, and we are its oldest active dealer. Established near Belfast in Northern Ireland, he revolutionized the world of folk guitars in the 70s with a fiercely innovative concept: a steel-string guitar with projection comparable to the finest classical concert guitars, featuring incredible power and sustain. This was the complete opposite of American guitars of the time, whose compression required a more vigorous pick attack to reach their full potential. Lowden guitars immediately garnered a following and have continued to captivate guitarists seeking unique sonic and aesthetic qualities found nowhere else.
The Lowden F50 ABO/SR stands out as a masterpiece of the 50 series, which can be described as the true Custom Shop of Lowden. The woods used for this guitar are of superior quality, chosen for their exceptional tonal and visual properties. The soundboard is made of Master Grade Sinker Redwood, renowned for its incomparable resonance and tonal richness, while the back and sides are made of aged oak barrel, an original idea offering elegant aesthetics and unique sound depth.
In terms of sound and playability, the Lowden F50 ABO/SR offers an unmatched experience. The F-size body provides clear, focused projection, perfect for dynamic nuances. Playability is also optimized by an ergonomic bevel that allows for better arm positioning and reduces fatigue during long playing sessions (no more guitar edges digging into the forearm—now it only cuts through the mix). Ultimately, to put it simply, this guitar is not only an extremely high-end musical instrument but also a well-crafted beast that offers extraordinary playability and sound. We are known for our appreciation of Lowden guitars, but we can say that if we didn’t already love them, this one would have changed our minds.
