Gibson has forever engraved its name in the hall of fame of guitar, from jazz to rock, blues and metal. Founded in 1894 by Orville H. Gibson in Kalamazoo, Michigan, USA, the company has revolutionized the guitar world with technical and aesthetic innovations such as the humbuckers or the Flying V, Explorer and Firebird shapes. With ambassadors like Charlie Christian and Slash, or Tommi Iommi and, of course, Lester Polfus, Gibson crosses the ages and musical styles, and stands out as a must-have brand of guitar, both electric and acoustic.
First released in 1951, the Gibson J-185 was designed as a smaller version of the SJ-200. This Gibson Custom Shop creation pays tribute to a guitar that is sometimes a bit forgotten, which is understandable when competing with the J-45, the J-200, the Hummingbird and Dove... It is a Jumbo size folk guitar, with a heat-aged Sitka spruce top, figured maple back and sides, mahogany neck and 12" radius rosewood fingerboard. A LR Baggs VTC Under Saddle pickup provides a plug-in for all live and studio situations.
The J-185's neck offers players impeccable response and playability, enhanced by the comfort of the Jumbo shape body. The Sitka spruce top, with its scalloped bracing, ensures that the sound is projected vividly across the space. Heat aging techniques developed by Gibson's Custom Shop in their Montana facility increase the stability of the wood and the smoothness of the vibration, and this guitar is a shining example. The maple back and sides increase the impression of harmonic richness in the sound, and on this model, the high midrange and treble presence produces a pronounced articulation of the notes in a chord.
Featuring the classic J-185 hardware, including the iconic mother-of-pearl inlaid Maltese crosses on the open-slotted bridge, this guitar produces a beautifully balanced and dynamic sound that covers the entire frequency range. The LR Baggs VTC system gives you authentic, breathtaking amplified acoustic sound. Whether in acoustic or plugged-in mode, the frequency balance is maintained, and the nuances of playing come through beautifully.
