Founded in the late 1970s by the late Bill Collings in Texas, Collings Guitars is the flagship of American manufacturing. While the brand now uses modern manufacturing processes, it makes no compromises: every element is carefully selected and every detail is given special attention, so much so that the quality of the models produced systematically exceeds that of the most renowned Custom Shops.
This Collings I-30 LC full hollow-body has the class and sobriety that many of us look for in a guitar for rock, pop, or more obviously, blues. It has a beautiful Blonde finish that shows off the simple and elegant laminated maple top and body, adorned with two f-holes, and two Lollar Dog Ear P90s with custom phenolic covers, which promise a killer tone.
This is a very special guitar, whose ancestors are the ES-330 and the Epiphone Casino. It is completely hollow, but the body is smaller (by one inch) and it has a mini center block that gives it just the right amount of rigidity for great resonance without feedback. It has a 24.75" pitch, a Honduran mahogany C-profile neck, and a rosewood fingerboard with a 12" radius. The woods, electronics, and hardware are all made of the highest quality components assembled with the utmost care. The bridge is a Kluson ABR-1, the tuners are Gotoh Nickel, and the pots are DiMarzio 500K.
The large size of the body will require you to fiddle in order to find an optimal position when sitting or standing. But as it is a pure hollow-body, it remains very light. The compact body helps in keeping it close to the body, and the Gibson scale puts the entire neck within easy reach. The medium frets will require some precision, but in exchange provide great ease for fingerings. The finish is silky smooth and allows the hands to glide along with ease.
The Lollar Dog Ear P90s do exactly what you'd expect from one of our favorite manufacturers: they deliver the authentic tone of the pickups Gibson designed and built in the 1950s, with less noise and a wider dynamic range. But these pickups are also capable of more: by playing with the tone and position of the pickups, you can go from jazz to rockabilly. From cleans to crunches, the sound is warm and creamy, with a touch of wildness that comes out when you push the amp. An amazing and surprising guitar.
